From air raid drills in 1942 to the arrival of the Interstate highway in the mid-1950s, a boy, Freddy Lemley, describes the American experience through the prism of his little town, Kettle, West Virginia. As he struggles in the post-war years to come of age and pursue the girl of his dreams, his town struggles to adapt to changes in America - economic growth, highways, accidental deaths, race relations - that hover over the town like the UFO reported nearby. During the 1960 presidential primary, John Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey visit town. Over a cup of coffee with Senator Humphrey, Freddy recognizes the loss of the way of life he knew and loved.
